We visited my parents last Friday and Saturday who live over in Lancashire, in between Preston and Southport (which is where I grew up). This is taken underneath Southport Pier and is a combination of 3 shots 'stitched' together. The second longest pier in Britain, Southport Pier was first opened in 1860 with an original length of 3,600 ft. In 1868 it was further extended to 4,380 ft. Southport pier has had several setbacks in its history, suffering from colissions, gales, and fire but none were as close to detroying the peir as in 1990 when Sefton Council applied to have it demoslished, only to be defeated by a single vote. Now a Grade II listed structure, Southport Pier, under the Southport Pier Trust gained sufficient funding to totally redevelop the pier with financing from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the European Merseyside Objective. The pier now it stands at 3,650 ft in length and is open every day except Christmas Day. A boxing day stroll down the pier is actually quite a tradition in Southport.

@Hoopand: Cheers Hoopand!
Great contrast, POV, b&w pp, and last but not least thanks for the 'far far end' sensation.

@Jan: Thanks. Yes, the pier is far longer than most, I think that this shot shows that well- the 3 stitched shots have certainly boosted the perspective and sense of depth.
Very very good. I like the wonderful POV and the composition is superb. It also works very well in b/w.

@Michael Skorulski: cheers Michael, the original colour image just didn't have the X factor that B&W had to offer.
Fantastic frame!Great job!

It's a stunning panorama; beautiful in B&W. The history and tradition also are appreciated. Love the detail shown in the under-girding.

Refreshing to see a quality b&w presentation where the details are released without the distraction of color. The pano really makes the most of the occasion!
